Blue Sky Offers Trike Training

Blue Sky is now an Airborne Dealer

Blue Sky Flight Park (BSFP) offers Trike Lessons Now !!

At BSFP, we’re always looking to improve both our training program and offerings to flex wing pilots. As you know, Steve Wendt is one of the top performing dealerships for the Foot Launched Powered Harnesses like the DoodleBug and the Mosquito. Additionally, we’re always looking for ways to assist pilots who would like more air time to practice approaches, develop their sink rate estimation or even learn about soaring. We use the trike for both aspiring non-powered hang glider pilots as well as those wishing to learn to fly the powered harnesses.

Trike Training to make the transition to powered harnesses easier.

But trike training isn't just for hang glider pilots. We encourage you to come out and take an introductory lesson. We’ll take you up in glass smooth air and show you how to perform the basic maneuvers. If you feel comfortable, then you can fly as much as you want within the allocated time.

Call Steve Wendt for more information and read on for more details. Voice: 804-241-4324

General Program

  • 30 day USUA membership
  • Ground school and explanation of Ultralight flying and the FAA
  • 30 minutes of air time where you learn the basics of flying a weight shift aircraft
  • Post flight discussion of how you did and what the rest of the program encompasses

Next steps

Our goal is to train you to be a competent, safe, respected pilot. This entails much more than just learning to fly the aircraft. In addition to the flight training, you will learn the basics of Visual Flight Rules, the FAA rules that govern Ultralights and the National Airspace System. In order to accomplish these goals, you’ll need ground school in addition to your flight training. These classes are informal and typically one on one. It is up to you how much time we spend on ground school. We utilize the USUA training materials and recommend additional reading materials. If you spend time studying, then the ground school is short and mainly review and discussion. We will also utilize videos to assist you in your learning.

Milestones of learning

  • Basic and Advanced air maneuvers
  • Airport operations, flying in pattern and landing
  • Emergency procedures
  • Your first solo

Milestones of the Pilot signoff

  • Passing the USUA written test
  • Passing an Oral exam
  • Passing a flight proficiency test

Advanced Training

If you really want a good taste of aviation, we can continue your training even after you have your pilot rating signed off. There are many options for cross country practice and even competitions and fly-ins.

Questions and Answers

When can I fly?

Like most outdoor sports, flying is weather dependent - even more so than most for your first few lessons. As you progress, you may learn in more challenging conditions, depending on what we are trying to accomplish. Lessons are available on the weekends as well as during the week if scheduled well in advance. Most of your initial training will be done in the evening. So, if you get the last lesson of the day, you’ll probably enjoy the memorable sunsets from the air.

How many lessons does it take?

Like any skill, it takes different people different amounts of time to master the skills for aviation. Depending on experience (and sometimes 3-axis aircraft time will slow you down some), anywhere from 15-40 hours is a reasonable range.

Where can I fly when my training is complete?

There are many Ultralight clubs in the United States. It’s a good idea to located some of the clubs in your area and acquaint yourself with the local pilots, the airports they fly from, and some of the local restrictions.

Do my hours as an Ultralight Pilot count toward Sport Pilot?

For a better explanation of the current state of Sport Pilot, see the EAA web site.

Is your Instructor Certified?

Absolutely. Jim Carrigan is our Trike Instructor and received his USUA BFI training from Kemmeries Aviation (known for their expertise in the trike field.)
